Body is Country, 2025

Essay abstract — Body is Country

This essay explores a contemporary portrait of a solitary Bidjara figure as a site of Indigenous visual sovereignty, ancestral memory, and political resistance. Drawing on themes of hair as ritual, skin as Country, and fashion as subversion, the work interrogates the ongoing legacies of colonial violence and the commodification of Aboriginal identity. Through poetic critique and theoretical reflection, the essay positions the figure as both deeply rooted and globally situated — an embodiment of cultural continuity and defiant presence. It asserts the body as Country: a living archive of connection, cosmology, and sovereignty, in an unresolved colonial present.
